It is the same, only there are chemicals used to give the aloe vera a certain consistency (gel/cream). The pure gel/cream should work just as well as that from the plant.
I think they are pretty much the same. The gel is like 97% aloe vera. I got sunburnt at the beach on monday and it really helped my sunburn.

it has the same properties as aloe from the plant however it most likely has added preservatives so it has a longer shelf life... aloe directly from the plant is probably better because its pure and you know exactly what your getting...
